A Philosophy of Leadership
The leadership plays an important role in any organization and affects its overall success and efficiency. This paper will discuss the concept of leadership along with its examples from the real life as well as importance of leadership in the emergence service. The essay consists of the following sections; my philosophy of leadership; the best and the worst leaders I have worked with and the importance of leadership for emergency services.
My Philosophy of Leadership
A philosophy of leadership is a complex concept, which is composed by mixing one’s opinions on a range of various issues (Tucker, 2013, p.97). It means that every person can have his/her own philosophy and it may differ from the common approaches. As for my philosophy of leadership, it includes requirements that I have for myself as well as the things that I demand from people I lead. Thus, I believe that the leader should be passionate about his/her work. This motivates his/her subordinates to demonstrate good results, apply new approaches and create fresh ideas. The example of the passionate leader was Steve Jobs. He made the employees feel enthusiastic about their job and this raised their productivity. Besides, the good leader should not be afraid of taking risks or even failing because this helps to learn and determine new directions of development. It is also important for the leader to see potential in all the things including those that have been tried by others and did not work. The idea is to use all the opportunities on the way. Even under the worst scenario, they can be useful because they bring experience. Finally, the leader should help others. It refers to his/her co-workers and people from other companies. His/her colleagues will have more motivation to work harder, whereas individuals from other firms may help in return.
As for my requirements for team members, I believe that it is important to respect the time of other people. It means that co-workers should come to the meetings before they start. They also need to remember about the time while interacting with vendors, agencies and customers. For example, e-mails should be responded as fast as possible. Besides, I have negative attitude to lies, excuses and cheating. This should not be present in the team of adults. Teammates should be honest with each other and their leader. The company will also benefit if employees can ask their colleagues for help. The team members should be decisive and be able to take responsibility for their actions. Finally, employees need to be friendly and reliable in relationships with each other. All these aspects are important for creating a good team that is able to work effectively during a long time and achieve corporate goals.
The Best Leader I ever Worked with or for
The best leader in my life had many valuable characteristics. First, he possessed awareness. It means that he accepted the difference between himself as a leader and his subordinates. This was demonstrated through his actions, communication and image. This trait is very important for a good leader because it allows him/her to keep an objective visible in all the processes that occur in the company (Economy, 2014). Second, the leader could make tough decisions. For example, he was able to fire the employee who did not execute his/her job responsibilities even if it was against the opinions of other co-workers. Third, the leader demonstrated empathy and used to praise the teammates in public and discuss issues privately. He also could offer solutions to many problems and was focused on moving further. This trait is very valuable for lasting success of the company (Economy, 2014). Besides, the leader demonstrated optimism and could communicate with others easily. Such attitude helped to achieve consensus and encouraged employees to work together effectively. Another characteristic of the leader was honesty. He behaved ethically with customers, co-workers and partners. The leader was also focused and organized. For example, he prepared various scenarios and predicted potential effects of the decisions. All the processes very carefully monitored. This helped to achieve high performance. All the plans were communicated to appropriate team members. All these characteristics made the leader very inspiring because most of employees appreciate the supervisor who is able to communicate easily, makes wise decisions, follows ethical norms, and remains optimistic and focused even in tough situations (Economy, 2014).
The Worst Leader I ever Worked with or for
However, I also have experienced working with bad leaders. The worst leader I worked with possessed a range of typical characteristics. First, he had a poor character; particularly, he was dishonest and arrogant. For example, he could blame someone in public without any reason. Moreover, once he fired the employee saying that this was because of stealing something. However, that it was not true. Such behavior of the leader made the team feel pessimistic and useless. The workers could not concentrate on the goals of the organization because they worried that the leader could blame them for their mistakes. Therefore, the poor character of the leader caused unfriendly atmosphere inside the team and low productivity of the employees.
Besides, the leader avoided problems, which is completely wrong because it provokes appearing of new issues. For example, he did not pay attention to the fact that one of the company’s managers did not suit the position and lost many clients. This caused reduction in the productivity of the whole team. In addition, he could not make right decisions that would be positive for the whole organization. Sometimes, he listened too much to other people’s opinions and this did not allow him to see the situation objectively. Apart from that, he was disorganized and his plans could change many times without a proper reason which made employees feel frustrated. For example, his approaches to customer service could change every day and teammates were not able to understand how they had to behave.
Such approaches to leadership completely contradict the modern requirements for good leadership. Thus, experts believe that leadership should make change and movement. It means that a good leader needs to establish direction, which includes making a vision, explaining big picture and determining strategies (Northouse, 2013, p.12). Another function of a good leader is aligning people that involves communicating objectives, searching commitment and creating teams. Finally, the effective leader should perform such functions as inspiring and motivating. This includes inspiring and energizing team members, empowering them and satisfying their unmet needs (Northouse, 2013. p.12).
The Importance of Leadership in the Emergency Service
In the twenty-first century, the role of effective leadership in the emergency services has increased. Good leaders are necessary for responding to constant process of change; particularly, they have to deal with downsizing, outsourcing and performance pointers. The problem is that the demand for emergency services has been constantly growing whereas budgets stay the same or grow much slower. Bad leadership may lead to ineffective operational decisions, decreasing budgets, lost opportunities, alienated labor force, etc. (Demiroz & Kapucu, 2012, p.91). On the one hand, poor leadership or absence of the one could bring the same effects within any organization because functions of leadership are generally similar in any area. However, it is necessary to remember that emergency services have direct impact on health and lives of people. Therefore, all the operations should be led effectively. It means that the leaders working in corresponding areas should be able to demonstrate transactional and transformational leadership in all the structures of the organization. Such leaders should be aware of their own area as well as possess knowledge about other fields in order to be able to see the big picture.
Overall, leadership performs the same functions in the emergency services as in non-emergency areas. However, the effects of leadership are different, which determines its higher importance. For example, if the leader does not motivate and inspire team members they may be indifferent to their clients and neglect some important symptoms. This can cause severe complications and even death. Moreover, employees providing emergency services have to work under stress and have limited time for making decisions. This means that each team member should know what do and do it fast and effectively. It is impossible without good leadership. Besides, emergency services should be organized very well. This includes the work of the staff as well as proper budget planning, reasonable supply of medicines and many other issues. Making mistakes or wrong decisions may cause serious consequences because each minute is critical is emergency services.
To sum up, each person has own philosophy of leadership, which depends on his or her views on the functions of the leader within a company, moral values, personality traits, experience, etc. As for my philosophy of leadership, I believe that it is important to be passionate about the work, not to be afraid of taking risks and new ideas, see potential in everything and be helpful. However, it is important to set requirements for people that one leads; particularly, they should be encouraged to respect time of other people, be honest, friendly and responsible. It is also reasonable to motivate subordinates to take decisions on their own because they usually have more information about the case they work with comparing to their supervisor who is responsible for monitoring the projects of many employees. In my life, I have experienced bad and good leaders. The best leader was focused, organized, decisive, empathetic, informed about the differences between a leader and team members. He was also optimistic, honest and inspiring. All these traits allowed him to build a highly productive team where everyone felt satisfied. The worst leader had poor character. He was disorganized and indecisive. Therefore, employees felt uncomfortable in that company. They had low productivity and motivation, so the company demonstrated low effectiveness of operations. Such effects of leadership demonstrate that it is an important aspect for any organization, especially for emergency services where every wrong decision can cause serious health issues or even death.
